The black vulture in Las Arribes
During the first months of the year 2024, the breeding of the black vulture has been confirmed in the Spanish part of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, a ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) and an ideal destination for nature lovers. Although sightings of the species were common, previous census data had only confirmed its reproduction in the Portuguese part.
As part of the Bonelli’s eagle monitoring work, new data was collected on the presence of the black vulture on the Duero border, which led to a collaboration with the Arribes del Duero Natural Park and Environmental Agents to confirm its reproduction on the Spanish side. The survey work revealed the existence of three nests occupied by breeding pairs on the Salamanca side of the Arribes del Duero Natural Park.
The black vulture is listed as “Vulnerable” in the Spanish Catalog of Threatened Species and is subject to special conservation measures. These data highlight the importance of protecting the habitat of the black vulture to ensure its survival and reproduction in the region.
The Arribes del Duero, with its impressive biodiversity, is one of the best destinations in Spain for bird watching, especially if you are fascinated by the most emblematic species, such as the black vulture. This species, which has found in the steep gorges of the Duero River an ideal refuge, has recently been confirmed as a breeder in the Spanish part of the park, which further highlights the importance of conserving this unique natural area.
